Dies irae (Gregorian chant) with neumes and lyrics | Catholic Requiem Mass

Dies irae is a Gregorian chant sequence used in the Requiem Mass (Mass for the Dead) in the Roman Catholic Church. It is commonly attributed to Thomas of Celano (c. 1256), a contemporary and friend of St. Francis of Assisi. This chant was mainly inspired by Zephaniah 1:15-16 and the Book of Revelation. It describes the Last Judgment where souls will be summoned before the throne of God: the just being saved and the wicked cast to eternal punishment. This chant is a vivid reminder that we will all eventually face death and judgment (memento mori), and it also calls us to pray for the souls who have died before us. Though it was written nearly 1000 years ago, it has been translated hundreds of times and has been referenced many times in literature and movies. Its melody has been used by composers for centuries in many pieces of classical music. Although this beautiful sequence (along with many other meaningful and beautiful traditions) was tragically eliminated from the Catholic funeral Mass after the Second Vatican Council, it is still used in the traditional Requiem Mass and is appreciated and loved by Christians throughout the world.
